DA FREE-ART-FOR-ALL

We have good and bad news. The bad news was that there was.....ANOTHER RIP!!! The good news.....the person doing the ripping was forced to take down the site!

This time it included nearly 8,000 images from DA, by the admission of the person who stole the images. This admission was emailed to another DA member from the owner of the site.....who admitted to stealing the 8,000 DA images from DA members.....to plaster as wallpaper offerings on his site, FRESH-PAPER.com.

The art work from DA artists was posted as free downloads and credit was not given to the artists who created the works, nor was permission to display their art given!!!

Art was ripped from 59 known DA artists that we had the time to identify.....59!!!

I had asked some of my friends to assist me in identifying the STOLEN ARTWORK, but we were only able to identify a small portion of the art of DA artists...there were many...before the site was shut down and dismantled this morning, July 7th...within 24 hours of our bombarding them with strongly worded email, threats of legal action, and statements that it “WAS NOT OK,” and demands of removal of the art work! Good Job Everyone!!!

Artists so far whose pieces were recognized on this site:

vulcania, silwenka, dwalker1047, Platinus, DragonWinter, nmsmith, Lilyas, bumpyduey, JoelFaber, MichaelFaber, lgmac, Scott5353, Cgx1, Silverb, Gibson125, altergromit, teddybearcholla, lgmac, lyastri, Sya, MichaelFaber, easynow-fractals, judazfx, 0encrypted0, seventotheseven, ninthtaboo, disavian, volantknave, ultimatesensefan, aeires, love1008, thedarkenednight, dreamspeak, nestalgica, marsille, suirebit, L33tM0b1l3, twodimensions, caspernium, lilyas, tokenart, platinus, onebadpenny, steell, droz928, unafraidsage, 1arcticfox, Thelma1, Patrx, magaman, dean-Mcdonald, anjaleck, milleniumsentry, hyruwen, ad245, vladstudio, bsign, and, Zueuk.

Some of the pieces that were stolen were from some of the very popular artist’s here at DA. I am posting what we were able to gather together before the site was dismantled. Please note that we did not have sufficient opportunity to identify all of the pieces, but we made a really big effort nonetheless. There were several deviants who had more than one image stolen.....

Stolen Pieces we were able to identify:

What I have not posted here were the images of at least 200 other artworks we recognized from other artist’s. For those artist’s who are offended by art theft, or who do not want to be ripped, the watermarking idea and protecting your work looks a little bit more important does it not????

Some say that they do not care, but.....a very large portion of this community does care. We care a lot.....and care enough to band together and make these offenders remove the art of our hard work!  We gave no permission for the use of our art and received no credit for creating it.

DA’s policies do not include defending artists who have had their art ripped or stolen, but as a community we can unite and do something about it. For those people who want to criticize, please know that we have read the submission policy and we include this here for your convenience:

Please note that the following comes from the journal of :icon1arcticfox:
DOES DEVIANTART OWN MY ART?

"The Submission Agreement explicitly states that you, as the original artist, retain any and all rights appropriate to your artwork at all times. These rights include, but are not limited to, the full and exclusive copyrights to your original artwork. By agreeing to the Submission Agreement what you are really doing is granting deviantART the basic permissions we need in order to display, showcase, and make your artwork available to viewers using the various on-site systems and tools.

At no time do you lose ownership or any of the exclusive copyrights granted to you by law on any deviation or scrapbook submission which you make to deviantART

DeviantART will not use your work for any project without first consulting you and obtaining your consent."

FROM deviantART FAQ POLICIES:

Can I just take deviantART submissions and use them elsewhere?

All original submissions to deviantART are considered the copyrighted property of the submitting artist.

If you desire to use, repost, or otherwise redistribute a deviantART submission you will need to contact each individual artist and obtain a legal license or other permission to use their property.

Please do not contact deviantART directly for this legal license as we do not have the ability to grant such a permission.

Some submissions may be governed by a Creative Commons license which grants permissions under certain conditions. These submissions are specially marked.

Some users may have enabled the use or our Embed or Blog This features which function as a controlled means of displaying their work without needing to directly contact them. These features are explained elsewhere in this FAQ.

Well, this article is old but not much has changed. Actually something has changed. dA seems to have given up on art ripping and has ommited the forum "Art Rip" or whatever it used to be called.

Deviants, please check ipadwallpaper.eu [link] to see if any of your art has been ripped. The art stolen and shown on that site has mostly been cropped and/or resized so only you maybe able to recognize it. Feel free to post info about your stolen art and associate the words art rip and stolen art with this website as often as you can. Thanks

I do have to admit, I did create a site about 8 years ago, with other's art on it. Gave full credit to the artists for it, nor did I allow right clicking of the site to save pics, but at the time, I didn't realize I needed permission, even if giving the artists full credit, so I took down the site and sent out apologies to each individual artists, even if non of them knew why they recieved one til' they read it. In other words, learn from my mistakes! Even if you intend to give full credit to an artists on art displayed, ask permmision first. Its just plain polite

I was looking through it for the heck of it thinking none of mine will be there, but in the photomanips it was the very last one. DA [link]

It's sad when someone does this and doesn't even credit you or even bother asking for permission to use it. I would love to watermark my works, but to me I think it is distracts from the image itself.

Nice work.
The right click thing definitely needs to be taken out.
[Thankfully, my art isn't worth stealing. :mwahaha:]
It's a real shame that people can't seem to keep their grubby hands off other's artwork.
There are quite a few people in my school who print out pictures from :devart: for use as "reference material" [which = copy]. The strange thing is, the teachers encourage them.

Watermarking takes away some fraction of the visual appeal of a piece, but it's necessary in times like these. You did a good job.
And if you want support against art theft, you can count me in.

Not sure how many DA's might know about this site but it is a free site that lets you put a watermark on your work.

[link]

I have read some posts that some feel it is a PITB (Pain In The Butt) but if you use it....it will stop some from stealing your talent and offering it for sale as backgrounds or screen savers.

There might be better watermark sites but I thought I would offer this one. Not bad but it does have ads on it.

I just tried it out.
Unfortunately, it's a bit too distracting [the watermark], but it's a useful tool for those who feel it's a PITB.
I'd prefer my own PS text though.
Nice find.

You know who needs to watch this is E-Bay. If they are making a profit by selling our stolen work then they are exposing themselves to liability. They need to watch what they are selling.

Should just let 'em do it for a while. Rake in the dough. Then evey artist who got ripped or "pumped" like they like to say can slap 'em with a class action.

OK, there are several ways to watermark your images. I have pasted 2 tutorials and the first one is to my Theft Journal where you will find another at the top of the page. At the top there are instructions. You will have to download a little program called Gimp, but the instructions are all there. Now, if you want to use the DA watermark....you can upload your image to 1024X768 but when it is done uploading, you need to change the size in the little drop down box to 900. Check the box that says enable watermark. If you do not change the size, it will not give you the option for the watermark. Another thing you can do is make your images 72dpi and upload small ones. If someone steals your work and tries to use it, the quality is very bad.

i think one of the first we could do is watermarking our own works, and encourage [or else, insisting] every deviant to do so to their works. my friend recently got that kind of accident too, she got her drawings put as a friendster primary photos. too bad she didn't put a watermark, but the good thing the thief admitted she was wrong. now everyone should be more aware of this. =(

The first positions, I will fill with various people from all over DA...then after that we will do it by poll once or twice a year. What say you??

I say it sounds like a plan. Here's one idea, a white avatar or maybe a club I.D., with the word "ripper" on it, and over the word a big red circle with a line through it, you know, the banned symbol ?

Or has it already been done ?

That is an awesome idea....wanna make it??? Not sure if it has been done, but we could put a red X instead....maybe silver and white bars in the background with ripper flashing on the front....I dunno...something like that. I think :iconmouserunner: may be willing to help you with it!!! Still need a name for it though, and a very unique CSS. Note me with ideas if anything come to mind please.

Actually, it HAS already been done. :iconstop-the-violence: uses it, as you can tell. There IS a Rip club, called :iconriplist: but I don't think they're very active. Both of these clubs are affliates of :icondarktactics: .... which is probably where I got the idea from DT home page. As for ~riplist as far as I can tell they're not very active. I could be wrong but I don't think so. Not that this site couldn't use a second Rip club, ... the more the merrier as far as I can see !

What we really need is a club name ... first & foremost & I thought since I'm less than useless at PS we could ask Maggie to do the avatar for it. She does all those stamps so maybe she'd be willing to do an avatar too.

And you're right about a CSS, we will eventually need that but maybe not right away. We could always use one already on site... I hate to ask Lily cuz I know she's swamped. Just not the dragon one or any of the others you see all over the place.

I will have to go look and see what we have there.....I think that is an awesome idea. I usually make one, but I think this should be more community, so a community CSS may be the answer. :) I think we should have our own unique avatars and stampies....it will be important later on. The group/forum will be called the RippedArtTaskForce.

Hello Ppl,

I am very very happy that the site has now been closed. I emailed Arnaud Chesne who made the site and this is what they replyed:-

Hello Almoace,
Actually, every wallpaper available on fresh-paper.com (about 8,000) have been "stolen" (I prefer the word pumped) from DeviantART.com.
As it seems to make a lot of people unhappy, I've decided to close the website.
See you later.

Arnaud Chesne

As you can see from above, they admitted to haven stolen each and every wallpaper on the site from DA.
I think something here on DA needs to be done and support Watermarking Everything. :)
